Neoma R. “Nene” Franchek, age 80, of Findlay Township, Imperial, PA, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at Heritage Valley Sewickley. Neoma, the youngest of seven children and the only girl, was born in McDonald (Number 9), Washington County, PA, on February 29, 1944, daughter to the late Joseph Rex and Grace Lee (Patton) Anderson. A leap year baby, Neoma’s family teased her and only counted her birthday every four years. As a result, she celebrated her birthdays on February 28, 29, and March 1 to make up for the non-leap years. Nene was nicknamed by her nephew, Bobby Anderson, as he was unable to pronounce Neoma when he was a child. Neoma’s family and friends all called her Nene.
Neoma was the cherished wife of 59 years to Joseph John “Frenchy” Franchek. They were married on April 22, 1965, in Enterprise, AL, while John was completing basic training prior to leaving for Vietnam. It was a small ceremony with only the bride and groom, pastor, maid of honor, and best man who was one of John’s Army pals. Having been together for 60 years, they still held hands when walking anywhere.
Neoma was the beloved mother to her daughter, Jennifer (Michael) Kopp. She was an incredible mom who taught her daughter to be independent, strong, and adventurous. Mother and daughter loved to travel and took many trips together. Neoma was also a lover of old movies and an avid reader, especially romance novels.
In addition to her husband and daughter, Neoma is survived by brothers Lamont (Dorothy) Anderson, Dennis (the late Joan) Anderson, and Bob (the late Rita) Anderson; mom to a spoiled fur baby, Gabby, who wanders the house from room to room, looking for Neoma; also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends. Neoma is preceded in death by brothers Donald (the late Jane) Anderson, Bill Anderson, and Dean (the late Betty) Anderson.
Nene will be missed more than words can ever express, and may she rest in peace.
A private memorial service will be held at a future date. Arrangements by HERRICK COMPASSIONATE FUNERAL SERVICE, PC, Edward M. Herrick, Owner/Supervisor, 951 Cliff Mine Road, North Fayette Township, Imperial, PA, 724-695-7332.
