Harry Sherbondy Obituary

Harry Arthur Sherbondy, age 84, of North Fayette Township, joined his beloved wife, Kay, in the arms of our loving God on Friday, June 20, 2025.  Harry was born on August 28, 1940, in Mt. Pleasant, PA, son to the late Rebecca A. Sherbondy.  He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Linda Kay Sherbondy, who passed on January 22, 2025.  Harry was the cherished father to his two children, Ann (David) Cognetti and Kelly (Roshni) Sherbondy; proud grandfather to Dominique Cognetti, Andrew Sherbondy, Tara Sherbondy, and Anthony (Lauren) Cognetti.  He was the eldest of five siblings: Donna (the late Joe) Ray, Daniel (Ramona) Sherbondy, Robert (Donna) Sherbondy, and is preceded in death by his brother, Richard (Cynthia, who survives) Sherbondy, who passed on May 13, 2025.

Harry was raised by his grandparents in Mt. Pleasant, PA, until their death and then moved to Imperial.  He worked at Kovach’s gas station during high school where he was encouraged to go to college.  Harry first enlisted in the Army and was part of the 82nd Airborne Division.  He met his future wife, Kay, when stationed at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, NC.  After marriage, Harry and Kay moved to Grove City where Harry earned his teaching degree from Slippery Rock State College.

Upon graduating, Harry took a job at West Allegheny Senior High School teaching history and psychology where he taught for 31 years in Room 212.  During his career, he also coached the wrestling team for 13 years, operated the wrestling clock for 11 years and the clock for football games for 25 years, and led the summer paint crew for 27 years.  Harry genuinely loved teaching and was honored with the opportunity to make a difference in his students’ lives.

After taking an early retirement, Harry enjoyed his garden, and then he later became a regular at the Starbucks in The Mall at Robinson.  This spot enabled him to reconnect with former students and develop new friendships.  These friendships grew into a regular group which gathered several times per week.  They even celebrated with parties for birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions.  In 2012, Harry was gifted a chair at Starbucks on which his name was engraved, giving him the title, “Unofficial Mayor of Robinson Mall.”

Harry enjoyed opportunities to make people smile.  He gave strangers, as well as those he knew, silver dollars and then two-dollar bills.  Halloween was his favorite holiday in which he handed out Reese’s Cups to both children and adults.  Although Harry may have threatened you with a bear hug or alleged “he was mean,” he was, in fact, a big teddy bear with the most giving heart.  Harry felt extremely blessed in his life.
