George McMurtrie Jr. Obituary

Surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and family, George F. McMurtrie Jr., age 85, of North Fayette Township, Oakdale, PA, passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday evening, January 12, 2025.  George was born on January 16, 1939, in Robinson Township, PA, son to the late Theresa (Demmel) and George McMurtrie Sr.  He was the devoted husband of 31 years to the late Donna J. (Chergi) McMurtrie who passed away in 1995 at the age of 49 years, and George and Donna are now forever reunited.  George is survived by his son, Gary McMurtrie, and his wife, Lori Gardner McMurtrie, of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, and their two children, Dr. Brooke McMurtrie (Richie McEwen) and Tyler McMurtrie; his daughter, Amy McMurtrie Albrecht, and her husband, Christopher Albrecht, of Oakdale, PA, and their three children, Alaina (Diane) Naeem, Alexis Albrecht (Braden Kowalski), and Alan Albrecht; and sister, Susan (Carl) Lewis.  Along with his parents and wife, George is preceded in death by his brother, Gary McMurtrie, whose wife, Karen McMurtrie, dear friend of George’s for 70 years, survives.

George graduated from Ohio University with a degree in journalism.  After a six year career in the U.S. Army, he worked for Gimbels Department Store as a buyer in the drapery department.  This drove George to start his own business, G.F. McMurtrie Drapery Company, which he owned and ran for 40+ years.  George was an avid golfer, loved to read, was a devoted Pittsburgh Pirates fan, and was a lover of all things sweet, especially dark chocolate and ice cream.  Over the past 5 ½ months on hospice, George’s family, including his nieces and nephews, did their best to make special memories, traveling to spend time with him which filled George with much love and joy.

George had an unwavering kindness, infectious smile, and beautiful soul.  His legacy is a life well lived, devoted to his family and friends.  Per George’s request, he wanted no service, only cremation.  His final wish was to be brought home with family and laid to rest in the spring with his wife, Donna Jean.  Rest in peace, George.

The family would like to extend their thanks to VITAS Hospice for their above and beyond care and compassion.  As a family who honors and thanks all veterans for their service, it is respectfully requested by George’s family that memorial donations in his name be sent to Wounded Warrior Project, P. O. Box 758516, Topeka, KS, 66675-8516, https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org.
