After taking cancer into extra innings, Dr. Peter W. Heh, age 51, of North Fayette Township, Imperial, PA, went down swinging on June 16, 2024. Pete was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on July 25, 1972. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Carol (Benson) Heh. Pete is survived by his devoted wife of 28 years, Larimee (Underwood) Heh; children, Danna (Tyler) Garbee, Trenton (Grace) Heh, and Walker Heh; brother, Joseph Heh; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
The world of special education benefitted greatly from the work that Pete did. He had his bachelor’s degree from Washington & Jefferson College, master’s degree from Edinboro University, and his Ed.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. Pete was able to learn from schools in New Jersey and Seattle, WA, and then applied the knowledge he gained in working with autistic students here in Pittsburgh. He put his knowledge of students with disabilities to work at PLEA, writing the Pennsylvania Alternate System of Assessment, and teaching future generations of BCBAs and special education teachers while at California University of Pennsylvania. Pete has been recognized nationally with his work and collaborations being published and presented at national conferences.
Pete also had three kids that were his life. He spent many days at the ball field coaching and being a spectator for Danna, Trenton, and Walker. His love for his kids and baseball/softball showed each day that he stepped on the field to coach them and their friends. Pete was able to coach in the Pittsburgh Power, Beaver Valley, West Hills, and Pittsburgh Hardball organizations as well as the Findlay Athletic Association. Not only was Pete one heck of a coach, but he was able to follow in his mother’s footsteps to become a great baker. No task was too big or too small for Pete’s baking, and he was even able to make Danna and Tyler’s wedding cake before he passed. As a father and father-in-law, Pete was able to make connections with his kids that have given them memories to last a lifetime. Pete attended eight Jonas Brothers concerts with Danna, golfed many, many holes with Trenton, traveled around the east coast for baseball with Walker, baked cookies with Grace, and continued to play in various fantasy football leagues with Tyler. He truly impacted so many lives between his work in special education, within his community, and on the baseball/softball field. Pete will be dearly missed by so many.
A Celebration of Life in Pete’s memory will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, between the hours of 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm, at the S.N.P.J. Lodge 106 in Imperial. It is respectfully requested that donations be made to Pittsburgh Hardball Academy at http://givebutter.com/pgh_hardball, where the Coach Pete Memorial Scholarship Fund will be created.
