Constance Chernik Obituary

Constance L. "Connie" (Stefanski)

Connie, our loving and devoted Mother and friend to all whose lives she touched, left us peacefully on December 11, 2020.  She joined her husband, Herk of 54 years, who nine years on this day traveled before her.  She was in her 85th year.

Born in Imperial, Pennsylvania to the late Stanley and Emma Stefanski, she would talk fondly of growing up in Tyre, PA - a coal miner's daughter along with her late brothers Stanley, Jr., Cooper, Frank and Johnny.

Connie graduated from West Allegheny High School in 1952 and went on to work at a law office in Pittsburgh after receiving a secretarial certificate.  She met the love of her life, Herk, at a local dance.  They would tell us that Dad told his buddy that night she was the one he was going to marry.  And that they did on May 11, 1957.

Connie & Herk's life revolved around family and friends.  We, Christine (Jeff) Falconer, Cindy (Rusty) Ayers and C.R. (Dee) Chernik, Jr. have been blessed to call her Mom.  And Mom was forever proud of her granddaughter Dr. Elissa Falconer (Chris Mann, fiance).  She would remind us of the A's she received in biology and that Elissa inherited those smarts from her!

She put those smarts to use as the North Fayette Township Wage Tax Collector, for 20 years, retiring in 2005.  She always enjoyed chatting with the residents that would stop in and working with those numbers.  She also implemented the first wage collection computer application, a big step for a growing community at the time.

Though the activities changed throughout the years, friends were always present - lifelong and new - all were precious gifts to her...whether it was bridge club, house parties, the couples card club, the garden club, shopping, celebrating the holiday seasons, the golf outings, football games and collegiate tailgating, the musical and dinners, baking holiday cookies, nut rolls and apple pies to share, getting her hair done, bingos, the Senior Citizens programs and then later at Country Meadows-South Hills hosting "Nix the Sixes with Connie".

In the end, the success story of her life was knowing and touching each one of us - as a lifelong friend, a new friend, a niece, a nephew, a granddaughter, a son. a daughter - in a way only she could.  Metaphorically speaking, we will meet her and Herk again, joyfully, on the other side.  Until then, she will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the Country Meadows-South Hills and Bridges staff for their care and compassion

Services will be private with a celebration of Life to be held on a future date.
